Catarina Juan - Patt - Mariano - Linda - Catarina Manuela - Josselyn - Neilson

     

Manuela went to a Massachusetts health clinic after the birth of her second child. She wished to be put on birth control. Her English language skills being poor the healthcare worker could not understand Manuela when she tried to explain that her baby had stopped breastfeeding rather early. She was refused contraceptives as the clinic employee would not prescribe contraceptives for a nursing mother. Manuela just had her third child. Her household income for a family of five NOT receiving any assistance from the local or US government is approximately $12,000 per year.

This woman once was a teacher in her country of origin. She is a very intelligent and responsible woman but lacks the language skills needed here in the United States to care for herself and family. The programs do not exist for the poor in her community. PAWHA personnel have gone in to help by volunteering time, energy and materials to teach basic but very important skills to people in need in the USA - the skills of communication.

   

Acu-point Training in New Bedford, MA

PAWHA is looking for volunteers that would like to help with programs in the New Bedford and Brockton neighborhoods of Massachusetts.  Workshops are being planned for Fall 2001 in Acu-therapy training for lower income families.  Spanish, Portuguese or French (Haitian) is helpful but not required.

PREVENTION PROGRAMS Programs for Empowering Our Youth

TEEN EM-PAWHA-MENT

SELF-POWER FOR TEENS

The objective of this Self-Power program is for each student to recognize that they can not control what others may do, but they can control their actions, responses and attitudes toward those individuals. It is a journey of self-awareness. Self-Power concentrates on each student acknowledging who they are and the source of their feelings. Students will learn techniques to control negative feelings, handle stress, communicate and listen effectively. The students will become aware of and accept the uniqueness of themselves and others. Includes: exercises in relaxation methods, guided imagery and creating positive affirmations. Self-Power sessions are dedicated to guiding each student in the process of realizing and acknowledging their true potential, so that they may succeed at "Being The Best They Can Be".

PEDAL PAWHA

BIKE MENTORS NEEDED

Cycling is an outdoor activity that can be done alone or in groups. The activity enhances physical, mental and emotional abilities. Riding gets the kids outdoors in the fresh air, builds their physical endurance, eases stress and empowers them to go that extra mile. It builds self-confidence through mentored achievement. Whether working with bicycles, endurance riding or riding for competition teens achieve these positive elements through sustained contact with competent and caring adult role models. These people provide physical training, all manner of bicycle expertise, and social/communication skills through mentoring.

PAWHA RHYTHMS

DANCE MENTORS AND CHAPERONES NEEDED

The Pan American region has a wealth of rhythm in its music and dance. This program for teens incorporates physical activity and cultural learning in a safe pro-social environment. In essence this is a "Salsa Social" where kids can come and learn the steps of many of the Latin dances in an hour-long class followed by a social. Fully chaperoned these events are in a safe, drug, alcohol, and smoke-free places for teens from 13-16 years of age.

DRUG - FREE PAIN MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP

SHIATSU ROUTINE FOR COUPLES

Shiatsu is the Japanese word meaning "finger-pressure." It is one form of Acu-point Therapy but it is non-specific therefore extremely easy to learn and perform on your partner. Patricia actually leads team of qualified shiatsu practitioners into the jungles of Peru  to train village women how to perform this powerful yet simple modality to enhance the health of their families.

In this two hour workshop you will work specifically on the trouble spots that get stuck; the neck, shoulders and back. This is not massage it is bodywork. There is no rubbing or kneading so it does not take strong hands. There are no oils used so you don’t have to show up to class in a bathing suit - in fact skin to skin contact isn’t necessary. Also as Shiatsu is from Japan it is traditionally done on a mat on the floor so it is PERFECT for couples tired after a long hard day. In fact, the routine that was developed for this workshop is a side position so that you can still surf the channels while helping each other de-stress.
